Thunder Mountain Big Band preps for the holidays Published: 12/06/2012 12:45:00 Many people who enjoy the entertainment culture of Juneau know that our fair Capitol city has a lot to offer. Theater Groups, Symphonies, a Lyric Opera, and a perennial favorite that you see at a lot of events around town, The Thunder Mountain Big Band, who are getting ready for the holidays. Ron Maas, the Band Leader, told us a bit more about their plans. "We rehearse every Monday night in our studio here and in this holiday season of course we're quite busy I think we've got five or six gigs lined up, the big one of course is New Year's Eve, with Jazz and Classics; we're bringing up a very famous vocalist from Los Angeles by the name of Cassie Miller. She played with all the big bands for years and now we're bringing her up here and we're going to have a big bash on New Year's Eve down at the JACC." I asked Ron about that quintessential big band sound; what really defines the genre? "Well there's usually five parts in the saxophone section, four parts in the trombone section and four parts in the trumpet section and that sound is the sound that so many people liked when I was a kid during the late 40's and 50's and 60's, and we have that same sound and we try to keep it going forever. Fifteen musicians and a vocalist, when we can find a vocalist, (laughs) The purpose of the band really is to continue the big band feel and sound, and that's what I'm trying to do."
