The Glacier Valley Rotary Club's "Pillars of America" featured speaker this week was the legendary Rowdy Gaines, who won 3 gold medals in swimming at the 1984 Olympics. In an interview with KINY's Wade Bryson, he related the message that was the focus of his presentation.
"My message is pretty simple, we all have dreams and everybody whether you're six or sixty you have dreams to be successful, to be somebody, and my dream was to be able to go to the Olympics and be able to represent my country and in order to do that I had to follow a lot of words along the way. Was I perfect? By any stretch of the imagination No, I made a lot of mistakes along the way but I learned words like dedication and commitment and responsibility and teamwork and setting goals and those are the kinds of things that I talk about and people can relate to in their life, It's all relative, absolutely it's all relative we all go through these peaks and valleys so I talk a lot about that and my message can be to a six year old kid or a sixty year old man it doesn't matter."
In addition, Rowdy also offered a few sage words of advice for KINY's listeners.
"If you want to be good at anything, Dude you've got to be dedicated, if you want to be a good piano player, you've got to be committed to it. You want to be a good teacher or a good doctor you have to have a certain amount of commitment and my father always taught me that anything of value takes dedication and commitment; if it's not valuable it doesn't demand that so to me anything that has value in your life then you have to be dedicated at."
Rowdy Gaines will be NBC's swimming commentator for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London this July, more in-depth interviews with him will be posted to the Olympic Zone on our website here: http://www.nbcolympics.com/kath/?aff=kath
