The unofficial results of the 2011 Juneau Municipal Election are in...
Jessie Kiehl took Assembly Seat 1 easily with 68% of the vote over contestant Brad Fluetsch's 31%.
Randy Wannamaker was running unopposed for Seat 2 and secured 89% of the vote.
The closest candidate race was for the one open Areawide Assembly Seat where Carlton Smith got 42.85% of the vote placing him slightly ahead of Loren Jones who got 41.86%. Geny E. Del Rosario came in a distant 3rd with 14%. With a margin of only 53 votes, this race may still change as around 1,400 absentee and questioned votes remain to be counted.
Sally Saddler was the only person on the ballot for the Juneau School board and secured 77% of the vote. There is a 2nd seat open, but results of the 23% write in vote were not immediately available.
A proposition to change municipal official financial disclosure requirements was voted down by 74%.
A temporary 3% sales tax (part of the city's current 5% sales tax) was extended with a vote of 71%.
Auke Bay Elementary School secured funding for a new ground source heat pumps system with a yes vote of 74%.
And the Adair Kennedy sports field will get a new artificial turf to replace the worn out and damaged turf that was installed in 2000 with a yes vote of 61%.
One of the more discussed propositions was the 5th one that would impose a $0.15 tax on disposable plastic bags at Juneau's largest retailers. The proposition failed with a no vote of 69%.
Voter turnout was 25% with 6,090 of 24,334 registered voters voting.
About 1,400 absentee and questioned ballots remain to be counted, as well as the names for write-in ballots for the school board race.
