National 9/11 Flag Visits Juneau
Published: 08/18/2011 13:11:11
Last Monday, Juneau had the honor of taking part in a very special project, a 20 by 30 foot flag now known as the National 9/11 Flag was heavily damaged on that fateful day and is now traveling to every state in the union to be restored stitch by stitch as a living testament to the resilience and compassion of the American people. The project is being undertaken by the "New York Says Thank You Foundation" and many Juneau residents turned out to add their stitch and remember.

Bill Ingram, a 24 year veteran of the New York City Fire Department and a member of the New York Says Thank You Foundation is travelling with the flag and told us about the restoration effort.

"There are so many local heroes, heroes on every level that helped put this back together and that's really what it's all about. Everybody taking a part, it helps to heal, it's like a healing process for the country, not only has it been to Tucson for the anniversary of their shooting, it's been sewn by the families of the victims of the Fort Hood shooting, and the Columbine Massacre.
Congressmen and Senators have helped restore the blue field, the Discovery Astronauts at NASA helped put it together back in Kennedy Space Center.
As of now I believe over ten thousand people have assisted in stitching this flag back together to try and get it back to its original format.
The organization is really not so much about what happened on 9/11, but what happened on 9/12, when everybody from all over the country came together and helped each other, so it was only fitting that every state took part in putting the flag back together.
When it's finished its been dedicated to the National 9/11 Museum that's going to be at Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan, the museum is slated to open by September of 2012 at which point this flag will become a permanent part of the museum.
it's also about the country and putting the country back together, a little bit of patriotism that we could use that we had at one time after 9/11."
