NBC for Southeast Alaska off air due to flooding

Due to massive flooding at our station, KATH-TV has ceased broadcast operations until further notice.

At approximately 9:40pm Sunday evening, the KATH-TV station was flooded. A staff engineer on site initiated an emergency shutdown of broadcast equipment and shut off power to the building.

The initial cause is believed to be a broken water main. CCFR, AEL&P and the City Water utility responded to render assistance. The building was deemed unsafe due to water 5 inches deep on the 2nd floor and was evacuated. The water on the first floor (on which the station is located) was about 2 inches deep. After the water main was shut off, water continued to rain from the ceiling of our facility as the 2nd floor was left to drain over night. Structural and electrical safety assessments are planned for Monday.

It is unclear at this time when the station will be operational again. KATH-TV is working with GCI cable and DishNet & DirecTV satellite providers to restore NBC programming as quickly as possible through other facilities.
